Clips for rig box

Postby S Cohen USA 28 » Thu Jan 03, 2013 5:44 pm

Hi guys.

I know I have asked this question before but, besides West Marine, I can't remember any of the other places where some sort of clips can be found. I need clips for the 11mm masts, some smaller for the light weight round boom, abnd some larger for the regular sails etc booms. The plan, of course, is to secure the rigs for transport.

I am building a new rig box and your help is appreciated.

thanks everybody and Happy New Year.

Hi Stephan,

This is reaching back some 10 years or so :D (thank God for archiving my e-mails) but excellent local (to you Americans, that is) source is:

http://toolclip.com/

I used their model 48-V (although 48 is the exact same thing without a white plastic coating - but coating is good for rust prevention).

They can be used for either 11mm or 1/2" masts - the tighter you screw them in (via the hole on the bottom) the more the jaws close and the tighter the grip. Worked very well for me for years (and still does). As I mentioned, it must be close to 10 years since I last (and first) ordered those - but their website seems to be still on (and still looks the same :D) so, I would assume, they're still supplying them...

Stephan if you are going to ship or fly with your rig box always tie your rigs to the clips as these boxes sometimes are thrown around and your sails could get damage as this has happend to me even with tight clips

And you can tighten those up for the smaller diameter masts by squeezing the clips together a bit and then play a bit of heat from a heat gun on them. If you do it with pliers then you will likely feel the plastic start to move a bit and that will be your sign to quit.

I make mine from some little 1/2 inches PVC tubing and just cut the one side out enough to allow the mast to pop through. For the smaller diameters you can either heat and squeeze these as well or else just cut5 the opening smaller so the mast can't escape. My rigs are held down by a small piece of bungy cord but Tony's advice is the best for longer distance travel where the box is out of your caring hands.
